But What Will I Wear?!

Catie + Mil Engagement Session at the Hu Hotel in Memphis, TN

Makeup: Kacey Acuff + Hair: Alex Flores

So, you’ve booked your engagement session? Let’s break down the most commonly asked question, “what do I wear?”

I am going to break down a few elements of how to plan out your ideal outfit. First and foremost, be yourself and let that shine through. Pick what makes you the most comfortable and at home with your body and personality. Those elements shine through much more than any fabric could show. That being said, how do we enhance that?

I am going to cover color, fabric, texture and patterns. I have created a fashion guide to help you plan for your session. Please inquire!

Please read with a grain of salt and live your best, darkest, brightest, sparkliest and most colorful life; own it! Be authentic and true to YOU. In 2022 and 2023 my clients have opted mostly for neutrals and more modern fashion styles with a lot of fabric for texture and movement. However, don’t be afraid to shake it up with some color!

Texture + Fabric

Texture adds dimension and depth. Some classic fabric textures to consider are satin, velvet, and linen. Tulle and chiffon are my favorites for creating movement and a cinematic effect.

Color

This is the one that stumps my clients most. If you are looking for a multifunctional color palette then stick to neutral tones. Neutrals tend to lead to timeless looking photos and can easily be altered with a gradient. If you like bold color then pick a statement color and complimentary tones to neutralize around that statement color. The trick to a seamless image is complimenting over matching.

Pattern

I find smaller and fine detail patterns photograph the best. Similar to color, choose what speaks with you. A lot of my clients avoid logos, large lettering and patterns. Along with pattern, don’t forget to accessorize!

How to Plan: Tips and Tricks

  1. Layout the outfits next to each other and compare different items. If you go shopping then bring an item with you that you know you want to use. Make sure the items comfortably fit to avoid the last minute second guessing.

2. Pinterest + Social Media: Look around and see what you like and break it down by the categories I mentioned above.

3. Always reach out to your photographer. They are always there to help advise and work through the planning.

4. Make sure nails are done, clean or natural.

5. For accessories, I encourage dressier or stylized footwear, but use the location of your session as a guide. Accessories include belts, jewelry, scarves, and more.
